When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics. This admirable self-reliance is rare in pop—in fact, Lights, signed a publishing deal at 16 and began writing songs for other artists—but after her 2008 self-titled debut EP (precocious enough to earn her a best new artist Juno) and gold-selling full-length follow-up The Listening, Lights was ready to open herself up to collaborations on her unexpectedly experimental album Siberia. The beats skitter and thwack, the retro electronics fire like decomposing lasers and the analog synths dirty up her trademark pretty melodies, propelling Lights’ emotion-soaked but still-cute croon into her sprawling, imperfect new sound. Call it anti-electro, dream-step or perhaps even grit-pop. Whatever. Just rest assured that it’s the same bright Lights; she’s just built herself a bigger city. Continue reading →

The Colorado-based electronic rock duo Breathe Carolina formed in 2006 around the talents of Kyle Even and David Schmitt. The Denver group's blend of synth-based beats and melodic screaming first appeared on the public radar in 2007 with the self-released Gossip EP. It was followed in 2008 by the band's first full-length for Rise Records, It's Classy, Not Classic, which featured all of the tracks that appeared on Gossip with six additional new songs. Hello Fascination was released in 2009 and peaked at number 43 on the Billboard 200, and in 2011 the duo released its third full-length, Hell Is What You Make It, featuring the killer lead single “Blackout” // Starting in 2007, Indiana teenager Jordan Witzigreuter began retreating to his parent’s basement to record songs that straddled the border between melodic emo-pop and bubbly electronica. Although he adopted a name for the project — the Ready Set — Witzigreuter took a solo approach to the songs, which he recorded and performed entirely by himself. Within two years, he’d landed a contract with Decaydance Records, who paired him up with a number of veteran emo producers (including Zack Odom, Kenneth Mount, and Matt Squire) to record a debut album. The result was I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming, which appeared in 2010. For the 2011 EP Feel Good Now, Witzigreuter teamed up with producer Ian Kirkpatrick and the occasional songwriting partner, including Kara DioGuardi. Continue reading →

At just 23, Christina Perri has already lived a handful of lives. She’s toured the world as an assistant to a rock band, spent a year at a prestigious university, became a wife and then an ex-wife, produced popular music videos, made olive oil in Italy and even served as a fashionista barrista in Beverly Hills. The whole while, music had been tapping her on the shoulder, trying to lead her down a path as a musician. It seems that fate grew tired of this shoulder-tapping approach as well and went for an old fashioned sucker punch. It came the night when a raw, defiant break-up song that Perri had written called “Jar of Hearts” aired on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance as a backdrop to a memorable piece choreographed by Stacey Tookey. The song struck a chord with viewers, who began downloading it from iTunes in droves, sending “Jar of Hearts” into the Top 10 on the iTunes Pop chart and into the Top 15 on the Overall chart overnight. Impressed, SYTYCD’s producers invited Perri to play the song live on the show two weeks later. Following Perri’s stripped-down piano performance on July 15th, “Jar of Hearts” continued its meteoric rise. After landing at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at No. 1 on Amazon’s digital singles chart, the track sold 200,000 downloads in three weeks. Suddenly a hot property, Perri signed a record deal with Atlantic Records. Continue reading →

The San Diego band first formed in 1996 when singer-guitarist Jon Foreman and his brother Tim put the group together. Drummer Chad Butler says the band members were all friends from their days together at high school. At the time, the San Diego indie rock scene was thriving as bands such as Rocket from the Crypt and Drive Like Jehu had just started to gain national attention. In keeping true to its San Diego roots, the band annually hosts Switchfoot Bro-Am, an event that benefits the San Diego-based StandUp for Kids, a national non-profit helping homeless and at risk youth. The Bro-Am includes a surf contest, charity auction, and festival concert. The event has raised over $500,000 to date, and this year's event attracted 10,000 people. "San Diego has given us so much", Foreman says. "Bro-Am is the most rewarding week of our lives. I've been given so much, it's natural for me to give back to these kids who have been dealt a tricky hand. These are amazing kids who are dealing with all sorts of issues". In addition to his role in Switchfoot, Foreman still finds time for Fiction Family, the acoustic outfit that he fronts alongside Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins. He has also become a columnist for the Huffington Post and writes about topics as wide-ranging as his backyard garden and inspirational civil rights leaders. Continue reading →

Mentored by legendary bluesman Albert Collins, Coco went on to become the guitarist for John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers for ten years before leading his own band. A self taught guitar slinger who plays with an emotional intensity few string benders possess, he plays left-handed and up side down in the style of Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. I Want It All Back, Coco's 7th solo album, was produced by Keb' Mo' and Jeff Paris, who also play on the entire album: Keb' on rhythm guitar and Jeff on keyboards. Billboard Magazine sad of Coco: "In a world of blues guitar pretenders, Coco Montoya is the real McCoy.
The Local Showcase for March brings a great lineup of homegrown talent for just $8 - come out and support local original music! March headliner: FARMAGEDDON. In the depths of the great recession, in the back room of a dusty Illinois tavern, a primordial soup of hootenanny brewed. The jam sessions turned weekly. The reputation grew. The name stuck: FARMAGEDDON. One Tuesday night, the band of musical misfits took their all-acoustic entourage on the road. With a flip of a coin, an unsuspecting bar was chosen and the world experienced its first Acoustic Invasion™. A weekly tradition was born instantly, and the band's reputation strengthened through its guerilla-style approach. Five years of surprise attacks and one-night stands at venues from Chicago to Chenoa have seasoned the band in a marinade of mud, moonshine and mayhem. With a playlist that spans a century, and constant evolution of multi-instrumentalists, you never know what you’ll get with FARMAGEDDON. You just know it will be one hell of a good time. Continue reading →

Matt O'Ree has been cranking out the blues-rock since he was an early teen. With all the trappings of a genuine guitar hero, he plays with fire in his fingers and blues in his soul. At age 13, he sunk his roots in the blues - Albert King, Howlin' Wolf, to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. After establishing a good foundation, at age 15, Matt played in various bands, honing his skills through time and pure dedication. This led to Matt being an accomplished studio musician only two years later. Matt went on to study as a music major in college as well as start his own teachings with guitar students. While working as an intern at a recording studio, he began collaborating with various musicians trying to bring his idea to life. It was at this stage in his career that he found the right blend of people to create the band. In 1997, Matt began writing and recording material that evolved into his debut CD, 88 Miles. It was released in 1998 and gained national reviews and airplay, pushing the band to a higher level which included opening shows for national recording artists like Kansas, Buddy Guy, Leslie West and Mountain, The Outlaws, Gov't Mule, Robin Trower, Johnny Winter, Dickie Betts, Gretchen Wilson, The Screamin Cheetah Wheelies, Bernard Allison, Chris Duarte, Indigenous, Robby Kreiger, Bill Perry, Walter Trout, Labambas Big Band, and Smokin' Joe Kubek. "Guitar World Magazine" claimed that "New Jersey's Matt O'Ree is quickly carving out a name for himself as a new guitar hero." The band has a new release scheduled for 2012 featuring such guests as Bruce Springsteen, Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf), Steve Cropper (Blues Brothers and Booker T and the MG's), John Popper (Blues Traveler), Bernie Worrell (PFunk,Talking Heads), and Jack Daley (Lenny Kravitz). Continue reading →

Banda Nueva Raza. The name translates to “ the band of the new race” the phrase “the new race” referring the youthful look and sound of the band and it’s band-members. Banda simply means band, and in Mexican music a banda is a wind band reminiscent of the old Austrio-germen polka. Don’t let this little fact fool you, banda is the most versatile and popular form of music in Mexico and has come a long way from it European roots. Banda Nueva Raza came together in January 1 2008. With only four years together Banda Nueva Raza has made a name for themselves in the Chicago club sense. Performing at venues like, Merenderos San Marcos, Mi Tierra, Vlife, Noa Noa, and Club San Jose in Rockford. The band has been fortunate to share the stage with renowned artist like Banda MS, Ramon Ayala, Calibre 50 among others. The band delivers the most upbeat and modern music with songs like “Mueveme el Pollo” but with its founding members originating from Tlaltenango, Zacatecas Mexico feeling the need to always stay true to their roots and keep songs like “el toro vejo” as part of their repertoire.
